What’s more, the hanging basket is packed with other cool sensors - view things like weather and light intensity on your dashboard so you can check up on your plant’s environment and get local measurements to help you plan your day (or outfit).

Hi everyone, we’ll be sharing some of our tips for setting up and organising your own home lab.

We all love the seaside, right? Whether that’s the English seaside with ice creams and muddy piers or the Caribbean, with white sand beaches fringed by palm trees, people flock to the coast for a bit of rest and relaxation, to enjoy water sports or to make their livelihood. The coast is a dynamic area at the mercy of waves. Rising sea levels nibble at beaches and powerful extreme events like hurricanes completely decimate them. To understand how to save them, we need to understand the forces driving their change. Having done a bit of investigation, we realised that trying to do this sort of research is HELLA EXPENISVE. This seems sort of silly…surely if you can create cheap, effective instruments for research then you can generate more data, this ultimately improves understanding. It’s with this (sort of) noble intention that we set out to make our smart buoy. Web apps are common place, but web apps that do not require internet access are not. In this project we show you how we made a BPM Counter in a simple HTML page coupled with vanilla javascript (see here). If downloaded, this widget can be used offline - ideal for musicians who want to create but do not always have internet access. Even better, by using the OSX dashboard app (which never seemed that useful before), we can make this BPM Counter extra quick to use.

Ever tried to get out of bed quietly at night only to trip over something and wake up the whole house? Motion sensing night lights installed discreetly under your bed provide low-level light bright enough to guide you around those stray LEGO bricks but dim enough so you're not woken up fully. As well as sensing motion, it's also possible to programme the lights to a colour of your choice for a fixed (or indefinite) length of time. They add a cool glow and ambiance to any bedroom. With some basic kit, a couple of extra bits and our T3ch Flicks tutorial and video, you can install these lights with relative ease in a couple of hours.

We've all been there, chopping vegetables with a knife so blunt it would be more effective to use a teaspoon. In that moment, you reflect on how you got there: your knives were sharp as razors when you bought them but now, three years down the line, they're thoroughly inadequate. "I should've sharpened my knives" you think to yourself. Shoulda, coulda, woulda but I didn't. Most of us don't bother to sharpen our knives. It's an extra bit of effort and when you're just trying to make dinner, faffing around with a sharpener is the last thing you want to do. But what if it wasn't..? We decided to make a knife block which incorporates a mechanical knife sharpener. A sharpener right next to your knives - and solar powered so you don't even need to bother charging it! This build is super straightforward and you end up with a great final product which would be a helpful addition to any kitchen!

We might have watched *slightly* too many horror films in the run-up to Halloween and we may have become *slightly* paranoid about a zombie apocalypse. But being the proactive lot we are, we decided to create a tech solution: a smart security owl! We’ve been super excited about making this since the new Raspberry Pi 4 dropped. Its 4GB RAM open the door to loads of really exciting possibilities, including doing image processing with deep learning models in real time, which our night vision owl uses to track people. Aside from all that complicated stuff, it also hoots, just like the real thing! This project is a fun and straightforward build and the final product is an absolute hoot (sorry). Get prepared for the zombie apocalypse - or just find which neighbour has been stealing your garden gnomes! Security doesn’t have to be boring to be effective!

We’ve made a wireless charging cover which fits snugly on your sofa arm and blends in seamlessly. This simple make is a great way to upgrade your sofa and is a step on the path to eternal laziness: it’s as simple as charging your phone by putting it down.
